Matter and Surface

A painterly line of work on support and matter

Matter and Surface brings together the autonomous painterly line of the practice, the one in which the support and the matter are the subject, not the vehicle. Burlap, raw linen, industrial canvas, decorative paint, spray, oil, acrylic. Materials chosen for their condition as a pre-existing surface, with a history of their own, not for their neutrality as an image base.

The axis running through this line is the extraction of matter from the support itself. Paint does not cover the surface. It inhabits it, tears it, lets it speak. In some pieces the weave of the burlap cuts through the mark. In others the store-bought stretched industrial canvas reveals its origin beneath the gestural layer. In others spray coexists with oil until it produces a surface that no longer belongs to any single medium.

The themes running through the line coincide with those the photographic practice addresses from another register. The questioned religious figure, the abused body, the animal as symbolic subject, suffering, and territorial memory. Painting does not illustrate the research. It is another place where the same thinking manifests itself, with its own tools, its own tempos, with a body of work that precedes some of the current projects and accompanies them.

Groupings

The line is organized into groupings by technique and by period, each with its own shared specification sheet.

There are four groupings:

• Burlap. Work on raw burlap with oil, acrylic, and dry pigment. The weave of the support as an active part of the painterly surface.
• Linen and raw canvas. Oils on unprimed linen and canvas. The support declared, not hidden beneath the conventional white ground.
• Industrial surface. Interventions on commercial decorative canvases, spray, industrial paint, DIY materials. Distinct from the WTF series in method and in the absence of photo-transfer.
• Recent series. A body of work after 2023, in a more restrained register.
